High Speed 2 (HS2) the UK’s new high speed rail network which is being built to resolve impending capacity issues for both passengers and freight, may be heading towards Long Eaton. The Government is due to announce details of the second phase of the project this month. On January 6th David Millward, the Daily Telegraph's Transport Editor, published a report on the Telegraph website which suggested that under the latest plans one of the lines north of Birmingham will head towards Derby and Nottingham, which will be served by a parkway station at Toton Sidings.
Broxtowe MP Anna Soubry said she would welcome the creation of a station in Toton as it would make us more attractive to business and bring more jobs.

Conservative Leader of Erewash Borough Council Chris Corbett said:
“I am very pleased indeed. I have been working towards this, as I would like to see the new businesses which would result from fast access to London. Whilst the possibility of becoming a commuter town for London would certainly increase the value of houses, there is the attraction of lots of new local jobs both during the construction stage and afterwards. Long Eaton is blessed with a large skilled workforce which would be able to get to Toton very quickly and easily.”
Earlier this week a Department for Transport spokesman said: “The Transport Secretary expects to announce his initial preferred route shortly.”

The Toton station may well be a good thing for the area - time will tell whether it benefits the area or just raises house prices beyond local reach - taken by London commuters.
ReplyDeleteHow it gets to Toton is interesting - straight through the middle of Long Eaton! Both the railway level crossings will be permanently shut for the HS2. Only the Nottingham Road bridge will be left to cross from east to west of the town.
before HS2. LONG EATON NEEDED A STATION. TOTON WOULD HAVE MADE A GOOD PARKWAY.
